Anyone interested in astrology is familiar with phrases like "My Sun is in Aries, my Rising is Libra." This is our Tropical (seasonal) chart; it represents our identity, ego, psychological makeup, and worldly experiences in this life.
But deep within astrology lies a second, lesser-known but spiritually far more resonant chart: The Draconic Chart.
If the Tropical chart is the "costume you wear in this life," the Draconic chart is the "soul" inside that costume. While the Tropical chart explains "how" and "what" you experience, the Draconic chart explains "why" you experience it.
The word "Draconic" comes from the Latin "Draco" (Dragon) and takes its name from the Lunar Nodes (The Dragon's Head and Tail). This system is based entirely on the axis of the Lunar Nodes.
The calculation method is as follows: The North Node in your birth chart is moved to 0 degrees Aries (the beginning of the Zodiac). All other planets in your chart are shifted back by the same distance that your Node was moved.
Thus, a brand new chart emerges where the aspects between planets (squares, trines, etc.) remain unchanged, but the signs and degrees are completely transformed.
For example, your Sun, which is in Capricorn in your Tropical chart, might be in Aquarius in your Draconic chart.
What does this mean? Your Tropical Sun (Capricorn) shows that you display a disciplined, hardworking, and status-oriented personality in this world. But your Draconic Sun (Aquarius) whispers that the deepest motivation of your soul is actually "freedom, reform, and service to humanity."
While the person plays by Capricorn rules in the outer world, they burn with Aquarius ideals in their inner world. The Draconic chart explains this inner drive.
The Draconic chart is considered the "Higher Self" or the "Soul's Contract." It represents the plan the soul made before entering this body, the wisdom brought from past lives, and its purest, untainted state.
Usually, people live out their Tropical charts (personality shaped by family, society, and environment) in the first half of their lives. But when they reach mid-life or experience major spiritual crises, the themes of the Draconic chart begin to surface.
When you start asking questions like "Who am I really?" or "What did I come here to do?", the chart that comes into play is the Draconic chart.
This chart is also incredibly important in relationships (synastry). Sometimes we feel an inexplicable pull and depth with someone whose Tropical chart seems completely incompatible with ours.
In these cases, there are usually strong connections between the Draconic charts. Your Draconic Sun might be conjunct your partner's Tropical Moon.
This is one of the astrological proofs of the "Soulmate" concept. Even if their egos (Tropical) speak different languages, their souls (Draconic) are singing the same song.
Planetary placements in your Draconic chart also show your "invisible" talents in this life. You may have no indicators of art in your Tropical chart, but if there is a strong Venus/Neptune influence in your Draconic chart, an artist lies within your soul, and it will want to emerge sooner or later.
In the Draconic chart, houses and aspects do not change, only the signs do. Therefore, while "how" the planets express themselves (sign) changes, "where" they express themselves (house) and "how they interact" (aspect) remain the same. This shows that the soul's fundamental dynamics are constant; only the costume changes.
Draconic transits are also quite effective. Especially when heavy planets like Saturn or Pluto contact important points in your Draconic chart, you experience events that feel "fated," out of control, and heavily spiritual.
Interpreting this chart allows a person to understand the contradictions within themselves. The answer to the question "Why does everyone see me as so ambitious (Tropical Aries) when deep down I just want peace (Draconic Pisces)?" lies here.
Draconic astrology invites us to step away from the noise of daily life and listen to the quiet whisper of our soul.
It is an effort to move beyond the ego and see the bigger picture of our existence.
If you are in search of meaning in your life, it may be time to transcend the boundaries of your Tropical chart and look at yourself through the eyes of the dragon (Draconic). There, you will meet a "you" that you have never met, yet have always known.
